In one instance, I led a cross-functional team to replace a custom-written search engine we received from a company acquisition. The engine was quickly approaching scalability limits which would lead to system failure. Not only did we avoid any service interruption, our end-users also enjoyed increased performance and improved relevancy for their searches due to the team's combined efforts. Phased Project Development and Deliverables: While developing complex systems, I've found that breaking the project into several distinct phases, with each phase delivering a specific set of usable features at its completion, is excellent for accurate planning and providing value early and consistently to stakeholders. Fast Prototyping: I believe in quickly prototyping new features, concepts, and ideas before diving into architectural design. This serves the purpose of assessing technical feasibility while also acting as an invaluable tool for iterative requirements gathering with clients to ensure their needs are met. Mentorship: Everyone knows code reviews are useful for mentoring and sharpening the skills of fellow engineers, but I don't think they scratch the surface of what is possible. For true mentorship, I've experienced firsthand the multiplicative benefits of engaging in pair-programming when possible. There are countless opportunities to fill knowledge gaps, perform joint research, and increase trust between developers.
