Background

About Matt Monin

RF Chief Engineer with over 30 years experience in all aspects in TV and Radio Engineering. My interest in radio and TV broadcasting began as a curious child. The first chance I got, I started at the lowest level in radio as an overnight board operator at WWKB in 1989. I began a personal internship in the station Engineering department the next year and worked my way up from there. Made the move to TV engineering as a field technician for Arkansas PBS in 2002. Learned analog and digital TV engineering on the job. Promoted to RF Chief Engineer at the end of 2016. Manage a very effective staff of 4 full time and 2 part time field engineers. Between my team and I we maintain a record of virtually 99.99% uptime for all the TV transmitters despite a number of them being totally unsupported by the manufacturer. During the Covid pandemic, when ARPBS began broadcasting educational content, the broadcast coverage limitations of the network became apparent. With internet capabilities in rural areas limited, it was discovered that an expansion of broadcast coverage was the best solution at the time. I worked to spearhead the first broadcast expansion of ARPBS since 2006, adding 4 new transmitters (along with necessary microwave links to supply programming) to serve areas of Arkansas with an over the air signal from ARPBS for the first time the history of the agency. This was accomplished by utilizing an existing state owned network of tower sites to avoid having extra rental costs. Outside endeavors over the years have included radio studio design, building and maintenance. Also transmitter installation, maintenance and repairs, along with a great deal of time spent retrofitting older broadcast facilities to enable the use of new technologies. Right now my responsibilities include a total of 36 tower sites between TV and radio stations. I still love it when I get the chance to use my creativity to make things work better and to help teach others to do the same.
