About Matt Varga

I love working in the energy industry. I enjoy seeing the technology and effort used to bring oil and gas out of the ground, process it and send it to market. Then going home and seeing the finished product at the pump or when I flip on the light switch and knowing that I was a part of that team that helped to accomplish this feat. I work as an Operator at Hilcorp’s Milne Point Asset on Alaska’s North Slope. I started out as a drill site operator with BP, working at the well head for eight years. In November 2018 I was transferred to Milne’s main processing facility. In addition to being a facility operator, I perform additional duties as the PSM (Process Safety Management) coordinator for our asset, providing asset specific support for our PSM program. Prior to working in the oilfield, I completed a Bachelor’s degree in Russian Studies at the University of Alaska. This, in addition to other academic work, had me teaching English at a Russian University, performing academic research in the Russian Federation and assisting a field school to bring students to Russia for ethnographic study. My long term goal is to find a way to weave my oilfield experience into an overseas career.
