About Matt Walsh

After graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geography from Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) in 2007 I decided to try my hand at an Advanced Diploma at the Marine Institute. It was during this program that I became interested in Geographic Information Science (GIS) as a career choice. Upon graduating with an Advanced Diploma in Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management (ICOM) I went back to MUN to pursue GIS full-time. It was here that I was contacted by my future employer, Aurora Energy. Aurora Energy is a wholly owned subsidiary of Paladin Energy, an Australian-based mining and mineral exploration company. My role within the company was unique. I was hired as a GIS specialist and field technician to support Aurora's exploration programs in northern Labrador. This provided me with the opportunity to work with exploration data at all levels. From the inception of a soil sampling program, for example, to data interpolation and interpretation, to the final cartographic product and report, I was involved in all stages of many exploration programs. I think the nature of my role within the company provided me with a very well-rounded set of skills applicable to office and field environments. During my tenure with Aurora Energy I was able to develop a number of skills of which I am proud. Foremost is my ability to work well with people from all walks of life. I am a very easygoing individual who is diplomatic while remaining assertive and I take pride in my ability to maintain and nourish relationships in a high pressure and high tension work environment. I am a very hard-working individual with a strong work ethic and drive to complete any task to the best of my ability. For these reasons I was chosen to play a lead role in a number of field exploration programs including (but not limited to) radon sampling surveys, geophysical ground radiometric and magnetic surveys, soil sampling surveys, and geophysical gamma probing.
