About Matthew Bailey

I teach foundational physics and chemistry to students pursuing a hands-on, career-driven education in health science, and serve as the Health Science Department Chair at South College’s Nashville campus. I deeply enjoy training students to understand how a handful of fundamental physics and chemistry principles give rise to complex biological organisms, especially to those students who believe the abstract concepts are beyond their grasp. I am equally excited to extract and analyze data to illustrate how much these individuals have learned. Currently, I am learning how to apply data science techniques to learn and quantify factors that most strongly influence and predict student success. While I have several scientific curiosities, my academic research explores how earth’s early unicellular life achieved cell division. My research skill set includes genetic engineering, high resolution fluorescence and TIRF microscopy, and the design and fabrication of microfluidic chips as an imaging platform for living cells. I develop image processing software to identify and track features (typically fluorescent proteins) from time-lapse images.
