About Matthew Baker

I am the Partner in charge of our Insurance Group in Brisbane. I have over 25 years of experience in insurance litigation and actively encourage alternative dispute resolutions and have participated in over 600 settlement conferences, mediations and case appraisals. I have a detailed knowledge of the Personal Injuries Proceedings Act 2002 QLD (PIPA), Civil Liability Act 2003 QLD (CLA) and the various Workers' Compensation Acts and how the interaction of these Acts affects indemnity, liability and quantum issues. Since PIPA was introduced in Queensland in 2002 and the CLA in 2003, I have conducted and supervised over public liability and product liability claims that come within the PIPA framework for insurers. My experience extends to interpretation of broadform liability, construction, business, household and motor vehicle insurance policies and the defence of catastrophic claims, property and pure economic claims. I have also acted in the defence of asbestos claims for Amaca Pty Ltd, the major defendant in asbestos litigation in Australia for the last 10 years.
