About Matthew Belzer

I am a seasoned teacher, leader, and facilitator of learning experiences. I believe that a university education should prepare students for the workforce. As such, I challenge my students to think about real world problems and enjoy exposing them to different fields of medicine and industry. I strive to implement the most current teaching pedagogy and technologies. My classroom is always an active learning environment where students can feel comfortable discussing ideas and exploring new ways of thinking. I am not a "it's not my job" kind of guy. I believe that my responsibilities extend well beyond the traditional classroom environment. I enjoy the extra time I spend with my students helping them prepare applications, explore career opportunities, develop study skills, and write resumes. For the past five years I have been teaching at Austin Community College. In that time, I have been nominated for 4 teaching awards, have been the recipient of the NISOD teaching award, have developed a study abroad program for the biology department, worked as part of a multidisciplinary grant funded team to develop educational software and content, and have developed multiple labs used throughout the department. I am a dreamer! However, I am a dreamer who executes. I turn thoughts into actions. I show up. When I am not working, I am usually engaged in some sort of activity with my girlfriend and two goofy dogs. Activities I enjoy include: SCUBA diving, snowboarding, hiking, citizen science projects, traveling, and reading. Courses I am accredited to teach and have taught at a university level: Anatomy and Physiology Introductory Biology for Science Majors Some buzz words to generate a hit on the linkedin algorithm. I mean areas of expertise: curriculum development, learner centered teaching, flipped classroom, content development, virtual reality and augmented reality technologies, blackboard, D2L, and a variety of educational software platforms.
