About Matthew Broadstock

I'm a partner in the Tax practice of Matheson, heading up the Indirect Taxes group, specialising in cutting-edge VAT developments at both Irish and EU levels as well as advising on Customs and Excise matters, and Relevant Contracts Tax. I'm a member of the Law Society Taxation Committee and Chair of the Indirect Tax TALC Consultative Committee on behalf of the Law Society during 2025. I play a pivotal role in shaping Ireland's indirect tax dialogue with the Revenue Commissioners. I bring extensive expertise in Indirect Taxes and in particular Value Added Tax. Our Indirect Taxes group provides sophisticated and commercial guidance on contentious and non-contentious issues for a diverse portfolio of Irish and international clients across multiple industries, with particular strength in navigating complex cross-border VAT challenges. I've served as Chair of the VAT Working Group of Irish Funds, Ireland's funds industry representative body, for several years. I have deep sector knowledge which extends to providing sophisticated VAT and RCT guidance for property transactions, and specialised advice to clients in the exempt banking and insurance sectors. As head of Matheson's Indirect Taxes group, I'm at the forefront of European VAT developments, particularly in digital services and emerging technologies including cryptoassets and the application of AI. I have extensive experience advising technology and pharmaceutical companies on complex VAT matters, including recent groundbreaking work on electronically supplied services throughout the EU. I'm a qualified solicitor and member of the Law Society of Ireland, as well as a non-practising member of the Bar Council of England and Wales, member of the Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn, and qualified non-practicing solicitor in England and Wales.
