Background
About Matthew Burrell
As a workplace trainer my current role involves working with a diverse group of individuals, abilities & disabilities through group work or on a one to one basis, delivering first aid training, during the course a number of subjects will be presented to the group through a range of learning styles; instructional videos, role play scenarios, practical demonstrations, written/practical assessments, verbal questioning & quizzes, remembering most importantly that the group has fun. Whilst delivering the course content through the previously described methods I have had to deal with a number of situations, an example of this, is how I have shown compassion & humanity is when a student might become emotionally overwhelmed when discussing a subject; Stroke or Heart Attack, as they might have had a bereavement in the family, just before I start with the subject matter I have informed the group that, if they feel upset about the conversation then they could take a break outside of the classroom and enter once they feel ready to continue, I also state at the start of the course when I show the subjects to be covered, that if they don’t want to speak in front of the group, that they can talk to me at any time during the course, that includes breaks, lunch or the end of the day once the course had been completed. I actively listen by letting the person speak first, waiting until they have finished and then confirm by repeating back to them that I understand. I have also used an application which I have on my work phone called ‘hub of hope’ which will allow them to find counselling services within a radius of their home or work location, if they would like to speak about the matter / incident to a more qualified person. Additionally, using non – verbal communication is also a key to my role as a workplace trainer I have to be mindful at all times how I am coming across to the students on the course therefore to help develop a warm & comfortable learning environment, I adapt my demeanour to suit my audience making sure I have eye contact with all my students, exude a professional manner by not using slang in my verbal presentation of any subject matter, I deliver the information in an easy to understand format; visual diagrams, practical demonstrations (talking through after I have demonstrated a stage) also once finished I ask if the group understands what I have just said, then give them the opportunity to ask any questions that they might have, to confirm that everyone understands & is happy to continue with the next subject.
