About Matthew Byce

As I reflect on my previous work experiences, I tend to laugh about the wide range of jobs I have held. I have experience in customer service, food service, sales, road sign construction, bar management, volunteer work with Americorps, and finally education. In education alone I have experience as a substitute teacher, Title-1 teacher, preschool teacher, fourth grade teacher, eight grade teacher, and a substitute principal. The greatest result of all these experiences is the fact that I have worked with all kinds of people. I've worked with people who are wealthy, and people who struggle to make ends meet. I've worked with people who make a living through their intelligence, and others who make a living through manual labor. I've worked with people who are well educated and people who dropped out of school. I've worked with adults, adolescents, and children. I've worked in groups, and I've worked in isolation. Throughout my life, I have worked with an incredibly diverse population and what I've gained is an immense respect for all kinds of people. This respect and my variety of experiences help me connect with all people. I believe that making connections and maintaining positive relationships is the foundation of education, and society. If the foundation is cracked, nothing else can be stable. Therefore, I believe it is imperative that we take care of our greatest resource, which is people. Everything else will come with time, effort, and collaboration.
