About Matthew Dobbs

I love to dig into a messy problem and piece my way through the design challenges. I will approach a design, divide it into engineering stages, and chip away at the design as the buildout sees fit. To accomplish this, my approach is nearly second nature. Growing up, I would spend my afternoons in the back of an appliance shop with a very good friend rebuilding motorcycles. We rebuilt Harley's, Honda's, or anything we could afford, and did repairs on bikes that we were fortunate enough to get to work on. We reworked frames, motors, suspension systems, wiring harnesses, or anything that needed done as we often didn't have much choice with our budgets. This gradually encouraged many of my builds to become passion projects and shaped my design process for engineering buildouts. Nowadays, my engineering career is much like my garage, ready for any project. I have nearly five years of engineering design and project management experience. I am responsible for the buildout of Transmission Substations in the Midwest and manage multimillion dollar internal and consulted design projects. I align, lead, and manage engineers, draftsmen, and specialists to excel in given a project's constraints. I design, review, and approve engineering electrical and physical packages for construction. I oversee construction in the field based on my prints. My job experiences have lead to a few milestones I choose to live by- Always put the customer first and provide communication and visibility - Encourage those around you to excel and provide opportunities for anyone to speak up or ask questions - Trust your gut instinct - When in doubt, ask those with greater experience what approach they would take in your shoes I consider myself a people person and love to engage with like minds. There is so much buildout happening in the utility world right now and hearing experiences and new perspectives is a benefit many folks take for granted.
