About Matthew Douma

I am a passionate and driven healthcare professional with a deep commitment to improving patient outcomes through evidence-based practices and research implementation. As the Clinical Nurse Specialist and Team Lead at the General Systems Intensive Care Unit and Edmonton Firefighter's Burn Unit at the University of Alberta Hospital, I work to bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and clinical practice, ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of care. Beyond my clinical role, I offer consultancy services in incident investigations, root cause analyses, clinical practice guideline development, and patient and public-engaged health system improvements. I have had the privilege of working in both large and small health systems across various international settings, providing advisory support and contributing to the enhancement of healthcare delivery and patient safety on a global scale. In 2023 I started the health technology lab "Miteh Health Solutions" a social enterprise committed to solving the modern health care system's most vexing challenges. In addition to consulting, I actively contribute to the healthcare community as a member of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada's Resuscitation Advisory Council, advocating for survivors and their families. I also have a special interest in improving out-of-hospital cardiac arrest care and have collaborated with EMS agencies throughout Canada to drive change in this critical area. With a strong background in leadership, mentoring, and clinical governance, I empower teams to take ownership of their practice while providing them with the support they need to succeed. My work with internationally educated nurses focuses on helping them overcome barriers to clinical practice through structured self-assessments and continuous development.
