About Matthew Falconer

Matthew is a research and communications professional with experience in academic, governmental, and non-governmental environments. He has a PhD in Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies from Carleton University. Matthew is currently working in Natural Resources Canada. Matthew's doctoral research explored the ways that scientific research is transformed and re-purposed into a new form of knowledge that Canadian policymakers use to make evidence-based decisions. He focused on the Council of Canadian Academies'"boundary work" of working at the science-policy interface to provide science advice. He has also published research on the ongoing climate change debate (with Graham Smart).Matthew previously ran a writing support program for graduate students working on theses or dissertations in any discipline at Carleton University in Ottawa. He has also worked in Carleton University's Educational Development Centre as the International TA Mentor and the Council of Canadian Academies as a Communications Assistant. He has also worked in the University of Ottawa's Department of Innovation in Medical Education, where he contributed to over 45 studies in medical education and did communications work for the department. He also previously interned as a science policy researcher in the Council of Canadian Academies and taught academic writing in Carleton University's Writing Services.
