About Matthew James Evans

I am currently a Senior Policy Officer within the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR), working in the Workplace AI and Innovation Policy Team. In 2019 I graduated from the Australian National University (ANU) with a Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics. I then worked full-time in the private sector during COVID-19, returning to ANU in 2021 to complete my honours year. I graduated with a First Class, with my thesis entitled "The Ethical Justifications for Workfare in Australia" interrogating the strength of philosophical justifications used in Australia to support workfare policies such as Newstart and JobSeeker. In 2022 I entered the Australian Public Service (APS) through the Department of Education, Skills and Employment's (DESE) Graduate Program. In July a Machinery of Government change formed DEWR which is where I completed my program. After graduation in December, I became a full-time employee in the APS. Previously to working in the APS I have worked in a variety of roles and industries, including as a Customer Service Representative for 4WD SupaCentre, a Sandwich Artist for Subway and as a Tennis Coach locally in Canberra. My primary work interests include research and policy work in the public sector. In my spare time I like to write creatively, play various sports, and listen to live music.
