About Matthew Keeping

After graduating from the Civil Engineering Technology program in April 2017, I began my career at Wood Canada as a Materials Technician testing Asphalt in the City of Corner Brook. During my time in Corner Brook I had multiple experiences testing asphalt, concrete, grout and aggregate samples as the Martime Link Transmission Line was nearing completion and the City of Corner Brook construction season was about to begin. After a few months I began at the Muskrat Falls Hydroelectric project where I gained more experience with soils and concrete testing. I was introduced to new testing methods such as the Ring Test for soil testing, different methods/material used for grouting, and I was introduced to a new type of concrete, Roller Compacted Concrete for the North Dam. Using my prior knowledge of compaction testing on soil, it was a great enjoyment being able to do the same wirh concrete. During my time at the project, I watched the North Dam be constructed from start to finish, that also included being a part of the final lift of Roller Compacted Concrete to be placed which was an honour to be a part of. I also had the role of Document Control which consisted of entering all results gathered from the lab and transmitting them to contractors/clients. After three years at the Muskrat Falls project and it nearing completion, I accepted a new position with Allnorth at the Voisey's Bay Mine expansion Project. My new position, a Materials Technician, required all the prior knowledge and experience I had gained with materials testing but I had a greater responsibility of inspecting and reporting on conctruction being performed on site such as excavations and backfills. Using my knowledge gained from working in Document Control, I am able to take my findings from the field and insert them into a report to be sent to contractors and clients. This opportunity as brought more conflict resolution experience to my repertoire. My career so far as been mostly working along side the same people on both major projects. A great ability of mine is to be able to work with other people as a team and provide ideas and advice as well as take ideas and advice from my peers to help get the job done the best we can and with the best quality.
