About Matthew Moniz

I'm a Dartmouth College '20, recently completed my master's degree in cybersecurity at Georgetown University, and Russian Language studies at Middlebury College. I have a passion for science, technology, and security studies. I've worked in various technical areas, including synthetic biology, genetic engineering, genome and microbiome research, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. I'm particularly interested in the emerging field of cyberbiosecruity and biodefense. I'm a Past John Sloan Dickey Center Fellow. I'm an avid adventurer with a particular passion for mountaineering. When possible, I transform our high-altitude basecamps into science labs. Most of the extreme altitudes research has focused on human performance in demanding environments. In 2018, I collected blood and microbiome samples on Everest and Lhotse's slopes as part of the NASA Twin Study. Some of my more exciting adventures included a world speed record-setting US High Points expedition, completing all the in 43 days. In 2010 I was named National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. In 2014, I became the 14th American to summit foot Makalu, the fifth highest mountain globally, reaching the top only seven days after summiting foot Cho Oyu. During the spring of 2018, I completed back-to-back summits of Mt. Everest and Lhotse.
