Background

About Matthew Monrose

As a PhD candidate in History at McMaster University, my work explores the intersections of Black Canadian and Caribbean history, migration, community memory, and intellectual traditions. Across my research and teaching, I highlight underrepresented voices and connect academic scholarship with public dialogue. I’ve served as both a Research Assistant and Teaching Assistant in the Departments of History, Global Peace & Social Justice, and International Affairs, contributing to projects on Caribbean colonialism, Middle Eastern policy, environmental history, and Black Canadian activism. Recipient of the GSA Keith Leppman Teaching Assistant Excellence Award (2024–25) and multiple national scholarships, I’ve presented my work at major conferences, co-authored and article, and supported diverse archival and community projects. Beyond academia, I’m passionate about public history, education, and mentorship, having taught ESL both in Canada and abroad. My goal is to bridge scholarly research with community-based learning and storytelling, creating space for new perspectives in how we understand the past.
