About Matthew Obrien

I am a recent graduate of the University of Iowa with a B.S. in Human Physiology and a certificate in Entrepreneurial Management. As I begin my professional journey as an Orthopedic Technician at Des Moines Orthopedic Surgeons, I am also preparing for my future as a physician. My long-term goal is to attend medical school and become a physician, with a focus on using my clinical experience and passion for patient care to make a meaningful impact in healthcare.During my time at the University of Iowa, I was fortunate to serve in leadership roles, including as a mentor and tutor in the Medicus Pre-Med Society, and as a member of the National Honor Society and the Exercise is Medicine organization. I also contributed to research with the Department of Pathology, which culminated in two coauthored publications on therapeutic solutions for multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and various infections. This research experience deepened my understanding of translational medicine and sparked my passion for finding innovative ways to improve patient outcomes.Additionally, my roles as a student-athlete tutor and learning assistant for the Department of Health and Human Physiology helped me develop strong teaching, communication, and leadership skills. These experiences, combined with my clinical work, have reinforced my desire to pursue a career in medicine and contribute to advancements that improve patient care.As I gain hands-on experience as an Orthopedic Technician, I am committed to refining my skills, learning from experienced professionals, and providing exceptional care to patients. With a long-term focus on medical school, I am eager to continue my journey in healthcare, growing both as a clinician and as a future physician.
