About Matthew Oliver

With a deep-seated passion for sports turf management, I lead the Grounds Team at the iconic Suncorp Stadium—Australia’s busiest major stadium field. Our mission is to consistently deliver elite playing surfaces for a demanding and diverse calendar of international football, rugby league, Super Rugby Pacific, and large-scale entertainment events. In 2023 alone, we successfully hosted 62 major events, including the FIFA Women’s World Cup, State of Origin (men’s and women’s), Magic Round, two NRL finals, multiple rugby league and rugby union international tests, and major concerts such as Red Hot Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters. These events, while career highlights, also brought complex logistical and agronomic challenges—testing our planning, resilience, and adaptability. We now operate with a full field of Hero Hybrid Turf, providing a high-performance surface that can withstand intense scheduling. Our team has the capability to replace over of turf within days following concerts, ensuring pristine conditions for returning sport—a testament to our systems, supplier partnerships, and operational excellence. Each summer, we host a myriad of high-impact concerts while simultaneously supporting the domestic A-League football season, requiring precision in field transitions, player safety management, and recovery strategies. Balancing elite football with major entertainment events is a unique and ongoing challenge that our team consistently rises to. I take pride in cultivating a team culture grounded in care, communication, and accountability. These values underpin everything we do and are key to our ability to deliver world-class outcomes under pressure. Beyond stadium operations, I regularly present at local, state, national, and international sports turf conferences, sharing insights from one of the world’s most demanding sports field environments. I’m passionate about giving back to the industry—providing guidance to grassroots clubs, supporting community sports infrastructure, and mentoring the next generation of sports turf professionals. My ongoing focus is on innovation, sustainability, and high-performance turf outcomes—ensuring Suncorp Stadium continues to set the benchmark for multi-use venues worldwide.
