About Matthew Olsen

It's been a long and tough road to arriving where I'm at today. I had a somewhat unhealthy adolescence that hadn't been full of supportive individuals that encouraged me to pursue my aspirations. Luckily, I was a very passionate person about a great many things. Early in my adulthood I pursued a career as a chef for a fairly long time. After I realized the lifestyle wasn't for me I decided to return to college to pursue a B.S. in Biology Teacher Education. Life threw some unexpected and debilitating health problems which had me bedridden for several years. Once my health improved enough to return to the workforce and put into practice what I'd learned in college I found myself at Munster High School. Admittedly, I hadn't yet had a chance to decide if education was really going to be where I felt I belonged. It didn't take very long that I realized that, not only was it was the only thing I'd ever wanted to do with my life, coincidentally the summation of my adolescent experiences were going to be invaluable lessons that helped me to discover my own style and belief that I was meant to be a teacher. I love my job, I don't like it b/c I have summers off or b/c of any other reason that I found my family and what I feel is my calling. I never really realized how badly I needed purpose. With a newfound purpose, the theoretical education, and after having the privelage of working under some amazing teachers I've been continually developing my ability, built rapport with my students, and every day has felt more fulfilling since. I am a life-long learner and I'm dedicated to continually improving myself for my students. Using a style I hadn't truly found evidence of succes until recently was hard at first. But it seems like this year it's started really become evident that caring about your students, opening up yourself to them, and letting them know you're always there for them has exploded throughout so many students that are labeled by some of their teachers as problematic find confidence in themselves makes every day worth it and then some.
