Background
About Matthew Romantini
My background is wide and varied, and has brought me to the work I do as a coach for voice in multiple industries. I have been a sensitive and perceptive person my entire life (I have always done uncanny impressions of my family members, and celebrities, gaining early facility with accents and dialects from both an experiential and technical standpoint), I funnelled this energy early on into competitive sport. This opened me up to performing arts, and in addition to my classical education, I attended theatre school, and studied extensively with dance and physical theatre companies across Canada. This brought me concurrently into the wellness industry, where I did many years of training as a movement therapist, and set up my private wellness practice. At the same time, I saw the need among fitness and yoga teachers and trainers, to use their voices in a convincing, authentic and above all healthy way. Many of these instructors, coaches and trainers were damaging their voices over time. So, I started offering workshops and private consultation, using my theatre-based vocal training as the jumping off point for this work. I started by offering this work to teachers and facilitators, and then expanded it to the wider community relatively quickly. In addition to my vocal work, I continue to teach and coach movement (yoga, somatics, yoga therapy, and mindfulness work), I teach performance at Randolph College of the Performing Arts, and continue to work as a performing artist in theatre, dance and performance art, as well as a recent dip of my toes into film and television work. Being a multi-faceted professional is a great benefit, I notice. These areas all cross-pollinate, and I am interested in the intersections between them. I am led by the desire for transformation in my practice members and audiences, and I make all my voice, movement, artistic and educational decisions based on that.
