About Matthew Ross

Matthew is an Ecologist with over 13 years of professional experience with the environmental impact assessment of land development, energy, infrastructure and transportation projects. He has also been involved with the development and implementation of conservation management and stewardship programs. Matthew is an accomplished birder and field ecologist and his technical skills include breeding bird surveys, botanical inventories, Ecological Land Classification, aerial imagery interpretation, Species at Risk (SAR) and Significant Wildlife Habitat (SWH) Screenings, amphibian and reptile surveys, insect (odonate/lepidoptera) surveys, wildlife habitat assessment and environmental monitoring and mitigation. Matthew also has experience with the coordination of field programs and supervision of field staff conducting background research, scope of work and agency consultation and is familiar with applicable federal and provincial policy, guidelines and protocols. These skills support the preparation and data collection to complete environmental impact studies, environmental assessments, natural heritage assessments, and constraints and opportunities reports for various projects in Ontario. Matthew also has several years of personal experience conducting genealogical, land and property research using online, digital, and print sources as well as correspondence with various genealogists, historians, archives and museum curators. His keen interest and dedication have involved the identification and research of potential cultural heritage resources, including those associated with his own genealogy. Research has also revealed many fascinating facts about the roles his ancestors played in shaping Canada as a nation through military service, political and personal connections to, and involvement with, several historic figures and events, business ventures and innovation, and even advances in medical science. He has provided artifacts and historical narrative pertaining to his great-grandfather’s service in the First World War for an exhibit in the Tain Museum in Scotland and is a member of the Clan Ross Association of Canada.
