Background
About Matthew Ruderman
Matthew is a licensed psychologist and is in the role of Research and Program Development Manager at UCLA TIES for Families, part of Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior. UCLA TIES for Families (TIES) is a university-community partnership providing interdisciplinary services dedicated to optimizing the growth and development of foster/adoptive children and their families. Matthew earned his doctoral degree and graduated from the Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology program at the University of California, Santa Barbara, with an emphasis in School Psychology. His research focus was bullying, victimization, and defending behavior and he also spent time as a teaching associate. During his doctoral internship, which he completed at Providence Saint John’s Child and Family Development Center, he conducted therapy, assessment, and outreach for children and families as part of a therapeutic preschool program and for a general outpatient population. Matthew went on to complete his postdoctoral fellowship at UCLA TIES for Families where he completed an infant mental health rotation and specialized in adoption-specific treatment and assessment. Matthew was part of Early Childhood Assessment and Treatment team at Providence Saint John's Child and Family Development Center and provided clinical supervision. This agency has a strong history of providing culturally sensitive and comprehensive mental health, outreach, developmental, and educational services to low-income and typically underserved populations in the local community. Additionally, Matthew is a former Clinical Scholars Fellow for Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Clinical Scholars is a leadership development opportunity for practitioners from diverse fields of health care. Interdisciplinary teams of clinicians collaborate across sectors, tackling complex health problems in their communities, and building a Culture of Health nationwide. The project he is helping coordinate is entitled Preschool Wellness Consultation: A Whole Body Solution To A Whole Body Problem. Matthew’s primary areas of expertise include the assessment and treatment of young children, early childhood trauma, adoption-specific populations, research and development, preschool mental health consultation, and bullying and victimization.
