About Matthew Schoene

I am the Director of Institutional Research and an Associate Professor of Humanities at the Helene Fuld College of Nursing. In this role, I handle all the college's institutional research needs, including federal/state reporting, accreditation needs, program evaluation, course evaluation and the completion of institutionally required surveys. I further conduct tracking of at-risk students, calculate and publicize important collegiate outcome metrics (retention, completion, job placement and licensure rates). In addition, I conduct ad hoc inferential analyses on questions of interest to the Helene Fuld administration, faculty and staff, such as the predictors of student failures, the determinants of NCLEX licensure success and the variables which influence retention of students. Finally, I also help maintain the student information system as part of the college's IT team. Prior to joining Helene Fuld, I was Associate Professor of Sociology at Albion College in Albion, Michigan. At Albion, I taught courses in Statistics, Survey Methodology, Urban Sociology, Globalization, Social Change, European Integration, Sociological Theory and Global Urbanism. In my academic teaching and scholarly research, I examine collective behavior and social movement activity in a cross-national context, with a special focus on the European Union, urban social movements and the rise of institutional distrust. My research has been published in a variety of peer-reviewed journals, including "Contention: The Multidisciplinary Journal of Social Protest","European Politics and Society","PS: Political Science and Politics","Global Society" and "Sociological Focus." I also hold experience in programmatic direction and management, having directed Albion's First-Year Seminar Program for two years. While I greatly enjoy my quantitatively-driven work as a member of Helene Fuld's staff, I remain equally passionate about teaching undergraduate classes. I am honored to be the recipient of three teaching awards, two from my time as a PhD candidate at The Ohio State University and one as a Professor at Albion College.
