About Matthew Shaffer

I am a fourth-year mechanical engineering student at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo looking to get hands-on experience in the engineering industry with Test and Development. Before attending Cal Poly, I committed to the United States Air Force Academy after receiving the only Vice Presidential Nomination from Mike Pence in 2021. I was later informed that I had severe hearing loss in my right ear which, unfortunately, disqualified me medically. I believe that everything happens for a reason and I am grateful for the experience that the process gave me. In the past two years I have taken on multiple leadership roles such as the Team Lead for Cal Poly Baja Racing Team, Week of Welcome leader for Cal Poly New Student and Transition Programs, Assistant Vice President of Recruitment for Beta Theta Pi, a worldwide fraternity for developing Men of Principle, and a server at Finneys Crafthouse and Olive Garden. Each and every one of these roles has taught me valuable skills, but, I believe the most important of them all is time management. In addition to studying mechanical engineering, I am able to maintain these roles.
