About Matthew Spann

Hey there- my name is Matt and I am currently working as an on-site wastewater consultant at Harris Environmental Consulting. At HEC, I am responsible for designing on-site wastewater treatment and disposal systems for both domestic and commercial premises. Designs must comply with current Local Government and WaterNSW requirements, as well as all relevant Australian Standards. A massive part of my responsibilities also involve liaising with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that designs are optimised for client outcomes whilst adhering to environmental standards. I also recently undertook my Honours at the University of Wollongong. The project aimed to study how carbon dioxide fluxes vary between different vegetation communities, and what biophysical variables may be driving any differences in carbon dioxide emission or sequestration. The project was framed within a small wetland on the NSW South Coast, and measured fluxes using Eddy Covariance equipment. I have a keen interest in working in and around coastal environments, including wetlands, and how these environments can be further understood for their role in climate change mitigation, but also what threats these ecosystems face under climate change. I also have a sound knowledge in both GIS and CAD softwares, and other programs necessary to undertake day to day mapping and reporting.
