About Matthew Terrien

I view my role as that of a craftsman who draws from multiple disciplines; integrating art and science into a cohesive structure where the final assemblage is much more than the sum of its components. I whole-heartedly embrace the concept of Socratic inquiry as it pertains to analyzing the relative merits of existing and candidate investment holdings. I strive to minimize my biases and approach my decision-making in as fair-minded a manner as possible. My formal Economics training taught me the supreme importance of considering the opportunity cost associated with actions not pursued, relative to those explicitly selected. A decision to allocate funds to a specific investment idea is implicitly a decision not to pursue others at a given point in time. Thus, every decision I make must be carefully weighed in terms of its marginal impact on the bigger picture. I strive to be as holistic in my professional endeavors as possible. My temperament routinely combines the following dynamics: • Rigorous academic theory with balanced pragmatism; • Strategic thinking with tactical attention to detail; • Strength in quantitative methodologies with respect for qualitative concerns; • Confidence in my strengths with an acute awareness of my shortcomings; and • An eagerness to learn with humility borne of proximity to minds much keener than my own. I have had the distinct privilege of working alongside many adroit colleagues. Whenever possible, I welcome the opportunity to mentor younger professionals in an effort to impart whatever wisdom I may have gleaned from those who have served as advocates for my development. In terms of core competencies, I view myself as an expert or at least an accomplished devotee in the following realms: capital markets generalist, portfolio management, asset allocation, risk budgeting, manager due diligence, statistical methods, data analysis, consultative collaboration, clear verbal and written communicator.
