Background
About Matthew Vetter
I am a researcher, learning designer, and open knowledge advocate currently working as a Professor of English at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. My research asks questions related to writing, digital technology and critical literacy. My scholarly work has appeared in Rhetoric Review, Social Media + Society, Postdigital Science and Education, Pedagogy, Hybrid Pedagogy, Technoculture, Computers and Composition, College English, Research Library Issues, Composition Studies, Harlot, the Digital Rhetoric Collaborative, and publications sponsored by Wikimedia and the Wiki Education Foundation. My co-authored book, Wikipedia and the Representation of Reality, was published in 2021. I am currently a managing co-editor of Writing Spaces (writingspaces.org), an open access book series for teaching postsecondary composition. Since 2011, I have partnered with the Wiki Education Foundation to encourage academic participation in Wikipedia, both by designing student writing assignments and by mentoring other educators through workshops, edit-a-thons, and collaborative learning projects. I also have a background in creative writing. As a poet, my work has appeared in numerous national and regional literary journals, including Midwest Quarterly, American Life in Poetry, the Louisville Review, and the Journal of Kentucky Studies. I was the 2009 winner of the Danny Miller Memorial Award. My first chapbook of poetry, Kentucky Lullaby, was published by Finishing Line Press in 2018. Before joining the faculty at IUP, I was a Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Ohio University Zanesville. Prior to that, I was the Assistant Director of Composition at Ohio University for two years during my doctoral studies. I grew up in a small town in Eastern Kentucky and have been in or near Appalachia my entire life. I currently live in Indiana, Pennsylvania, with my wife and three children.
