About Maurice Smith

Maurice specialises in analyzing, structuring and sourcing capital for owners of mid market real estate and infrastructure assets including construction and term debt financing to optimize return on equity. Over the past five years he has advised and closed $500 million in debt and equity financings with institutional and private lenders, investors in alternatives and global asset managers. Since 2019, Maurice is also external investment advisor to Q Wealth Partners, an investment counsel with $4 bn AUM, on its Alternatives funds of funds that hold $460 million in private mortgages, private corporate debt, private equity and infrastructure assets. Maurice’s 25 year career in finance includes ten years commercial real estate development experience as financing advisor to developers, including to assess and structure financing requirements and underwrite proposals for private debt lenders and equity investors. This private markets experience was preceded by progressively higher levels of responsibility in banking and public capital markets. He was Executive Director, Senior Fixed Income Research Analyst at CIBC World Markets, focused on bond markets analysis for sales, trading and fixed income investment management. He began his banking career in corporate financial management and control with CIBC’s highly regarded CFO Development Rotation Program that included assignments at CIBC Wood Gundy New York, CIBC Commercial Bank Toronto and CIBC Capital Management. Maurice holds an MBA from Richard Ivey School of Business where he subsequently worked as Research Analyst and Case Writer involving field research on business conditions in the emerging markets of East Europe, Russia and China; an M.Sc. Economics from Université de Montréal; and a B.Sc. from University of Manitoba St. Boniface College where he later taught undergraduate Economics. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and is registered as a Mortgage Agent 1 in Ontario under broker license #10210. Maurice has been an active volunteer in minor hockey as coach and manager, and served for over eight years as volunteer on the Professional Development Committee at CFA Society Toronto including as co-senior advisor. He is fluent in French.
