About Max Naumann

As a PhD student in the Department of Clinical Spectroscopic Diagnostics at the Leibniz Institute for Photonic Technologies (IPHT) in Jena, I am passionate about the transformative potential of light in biological and medical research. My academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry at Leipzig University, where I built a robust foundation in molecular and cellular processes. I then pursued an M. Sc. in Medical Photonics at the University of Jena, gaining in-depth expertise in optical principles, biomedical imaging and advanced spectroscopic methods, and bridging the gap between fundamental biological understanding and cutting-edge photonic applications. My current research at the IPHT involves applying sophisticated biophotonic techniques, such as fluorescence microscopy, metabolic FLIM and, in particular, label-free Raman spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopic imaging, to shed light on the complexities of the immune system. I specialise in phenotyping immune cells using spectroscopy by analysing their subtle intracellular chemical changes during activation or in response to pathogenic stimuli. Through meticulous in vitro and ex vivo studies, my work aims to improve our understanding of host responses to infections, with the ultimate goal of contributing to advanced diagnostic capabilities and impactful solutions in human health. I am passionate about pushing the boundaries of what photonics can reveal about life and disease.
