About Max Shilling

Nominated for the 'Innovation of the Year' award in the 2023 British Data Awards and the ‘Most Innovative Use of AI’ award in the 2022 DataIQ Awards for my work on the Machine Learning Passenger Forecast at British Airways. I joined British Airways in February 2021 as a Data Scientist, predominantly working on web scraping and machine learning projects. This has developed into deploying Live ML and being amongst the first to use Gen-AI at BA. My work also involves reporting to key stakeholders, many of whom are not data literate. These are currently within both Sustainability and Safety & Security, while I have also worked within the Networks & Alliances area, and my work has supported other areas such as Cargo and Operations. I also completed a secondment in the Commercial area, handling sensitive data. I am skilled in Python (including for web scraping and machine learning), SQL (creating and extracting from databases), Tableau (building interactive dashboards for reporting) and R (statistical analysis and animated visualisation). My ability in these began with taking courses using R whilst at university, before teaching myself Python, SQL and Tableau during my spare time during the pandemic. I have continued to develop these skills whilst at BA. During my time at University, I graduated top of my class in 2019 (First Class degree in Sociology BSc with applied data analytics, 75% average), and received two ‘Dean’s Commendation for Exceptional Performance’s and the Barry Turner prize for Best Academic Performance Final Year Sociology Student. My academic work achieved exclusively first-class grades, and while studying, I taught the most advanced social science data analysis module and wrote the course textbook.
