About Max Smith

I am a pragmatic and energetic academic who values education as a means to equip people for successful careers. After an early career in the international communications industry, I joined Flinders University’s Business School and became part of the School's international business team. My international focus and outcomes orientation led to my appointment to the role of Associate Dean (International and Community) for the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences at Flinders University. In this role I was able to translate that genuine interest in student outcomes into strategies to attract and retain both domestic and international students. I was also able to draw on my industry experience to develop international student programs that met current and emerging industry needs in a rapidly changing environment. After two years of early retirement, in 2019 I decided to return to the work environment on a part-time basis in teaching or consulting roles. Since then, I have worked part-time for the University of Adelaide, the Adelaide Institute of Higher Education and Flinders International Study Centre. My primary teaching area, delivered in both Australia and China, was in International Business, including International Marketing. I also have expertise in entrepreneurship, family business and SMEs. I am a former member of the Academy of International Business; the Australian and New Zealand International Business Academy; the Academy of World Business, Marketing and Management Development; the Australian Marketing Institute and the Academy of Marketing Science. I was also a Visiting Fellow with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in 2009 and a Board Member of the Exporters' Association of South Australia. In the next phase of my career, I am looking to continue teaching in a part-time capacity and use my experience to develop new programs and course content. I am also open to contributing my international business and entrepreneurship expertise to industry on a consulting basis.
