About Max Sosa
As a chemist, my research interests lie at the interface of organic chemistry and biochemistry. Nature uses a diverse enzymatic toolkit to build complex molecules. By discovering new molecules and the enzymes which make them, I am aiming to expand the enzymatic repertoire available to organic chemists while also discovering how and why microbes make specialized metabolites. During my PhD with Prof. Michelle Chang, I discovered a new biosynthetic strategy for non-canonical amino acid biosynthesis. Currently, I'm working as a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow in University of Tokyo's Laboratory of Natural Products Chemistry, headed by Prof. Ikuro Abe, working to elucidate unknown pathways for bioactive secondary metabolites.
