About Max Tillmann

I am a physicist with 5+ years of experience in research and engineering in the field of optics and quantum photonics. My areas of expertise are in integrated, bulk and fiber optics including the manipulation of various optical properties (polarization, temporal, spectral and spatial modal structure) and the detection of optical fields down to the level of single-photon counting. I am familiar with the design, operation and optimization of a broad range of light sources ranging from single-photon and entanglement sources to lasers and incoherent emitters. I put an emphasis on the engineering aspects of my work: initial ideas evolve through a combination of computer-aided design and simulation and an accurate characterization on the component level into functional prototypes. Their quality of operation is quantified on the (sub)-system level by appropriate metrics and if necessary custom-developed metrology tools. This approach is the basis of my research publications on recent models of quantum computing, integrated optical network characterization and quantum interference. Through my passion for music, guitars and the hardware involved in its creation and reproduction, I have acquired a good knowledge of analog electronics.
