About Maxwell Sharkey

I graduated with a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree in May 2015 from Rutgers University. I have worked in several settings in the field of social work, and since May of 2018, I have worked as a hospital social worker in Worcester, MA. I currently work at UMass Memorial in both the emergency department and medical/surgical unit West 2. I work with a diverse patient population, and specially advocate for and treat those with substance use issues, mental health issues, homelessness, those requiring guardianship assistance, and many others. At UMass I have supervised two MSW students from local universities as their primary field instructor. I have also assisted in training recently hired coworkers. I have led several projects, including helping to start the UMass Social Work Council. I work per diem at UMass Emergency Mental Health (EMH) where I complete mental health assessments, and refer to mental health services as appropriate. I also work per diem at the UMass University Campus ED, including the Trauma Center. My primary role in the Trauma Center is to provide emotional support to loved ones of trauma patients, and connect them to the appropriate providers while their loved ones are being treated.
