About May Hohman

I have always known from a young age that something was off about our society. I had a "sense" if you will. I wondered why some people had more power than others, and why some people were "allowed" the opportunity to do things while others were not. I had an inkling that we created our society's power dynamics and could change them. That belief started my journey to academia, and my lived experience created a hunger to continue learning more. I wanted to understand why society was the way it was, why oppression exists, and how it manifests. I wanted to know why transgender people attempt suicide much more than most other populations. I wanted to know why depression and anxiety are on the rise. I wanted to know how trauma gets created, what effects it has on the body and brain, and ask if we participated in creating it. Most importantly, I wanted to know what I, and we, could do with that information. The experience and knowledge I've gained have been working towards advancing social justice and increasing the mental well-being of others. My bachelor's was aimed at studying LGBTQI+ history, social justice, and understanding mental illness and trauma. The combined academic and theoretical framework from my degree combined with on-the-ground experience in Behavioral Health Professional work has allowed me to put that knowledge to good use. As a Case Manager and Program Director, I learned to observe the system at large and effectively move through it to create purposeful change. I aim to influence change on a systematic level while also helping individuals create lives that are meaningful to them. Let me help you with that. Let's do it, together. Warmly, May Hohman
