Background
About May Y.
Former university faculty of English in Hong Kong with teaching experience in Theatre/Drama Performance, Contemporary English Literature (Drama, Poetry, Asian Fictions), Creative Language Arts, Children's Literature, Feminist Literary Adaptation, Communications, and Cultural Studies-themed courses and workshops. Expertise in community-engaged theatre workshopping, critical pedagogy, and cultural representations of identity in social campaigns/ civic engagement from interdisciplinary humanities perspectives. Invited talks and workshops in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and Australia. Veteran piano teacher, former members of orchestras and choirs (violin and soprano), organ student, and Chinese music player (erhu and yangqin ). After three years of forced career break due to political disruption and unable to return home (Hong Kong), I've decided to transform my situation as a newly-displaced Hong Kong-Canadian as well as UK-HK resident into my privilege for a refreshed research direction. I would love to pick up my life aspiration as an academic and a facilitator, from scratch. My current research looks into the contrasts of newly displaced Hong Konger communities' self-identity re-establishment through community cultural activities (such as 'Hong Kong Festivals','Hong Kong cultural markets' etc.) and civic engagement in Canada and the UK, two major countries offering 'lifeboat schemes' for Hong Kongers since 2021. Feel free to reach out for collaboration in workshops/ lectures, conference panels or pedagogic initiatives. Legal rights to work in Canada (as PR) and the UK. Academic qualifications attained in Hong Kong and Canada - with a Food Media postgraduate qualification earned during my career break, where I experimented with food writing, food styling and photography, food video production, and the study of foodways (ethnical food and dining cultures)! Currently splitting time between the two nations for research. Referrals and recommendations highly appreciated! Verified International Academic Qualifications by World Education Services (WES) in Canada and the States, and National Academic Recognition Centre (UK NARIC/ ENIC) in the UK.
