About Maya M.

I am a qualified TypeWell transcriber and have been working in the field since February 2019. I provide live communication access for Deaf and Hard of hearing students in school and university settings, and have become quite passionate about it. In 2015, four years prior to beginning to transcribe, I was working towards becoming a nurse after getting a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Physiology. I was invited to help lead a medical trip in Thailand. Knowing it would be a great experience and be good for my applications to Masters in Nursing programs, I immediately accepted the invitation. What I didn’t know was that it would lead to almost four years of exploring the globe: engaging in work opportunities, giving back through volunteer positions, opening my mind to all different walks of life, and maximizing scarce resources on a consistent basis. I believe those four years taught me far more than I could have expected, instilling more independence, motivation, resourcefulness and tenacity in me than I ever possessed before. In May 2014, prior to traveling, I graduated from California State University, Chico with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology. I am an extremely motivated and passionate individual, particularly when it comes to health, wellness, and travel. I have a strong work ethic and background in leading others and developing interpersonal relationships. Through travel I have become very skilled in adapting to new locations and situations, negotiation, networking, problem solving, empathy, communication, and cultural awareness.
