About Maya Thomas

My fascination with Biomedical Engineering started in high school, when I discovered the concept of 3D organ printing. For the first time, I had discovered the fusion of my two main interests: anatomy and engineering. As part of a project for my Introduction to Biomedical Engineering Design class, I had the opportunity to speak with a technician at an assisted living facility while working on a project focusing on sciatica. This opened my eyes to the extreme challenges within the assisted living environment, which tests the fortitude of everyone involved. Although I was inspired by the drive and love the technician had for her job, it was heart wrenching when she told me that sciatica and/or similar conditions afflict her and most of her co-workers every day. Connecting directly with my intended users not only gave my project a clear purpose - it solidified my passion for pursuing Biomedical Engineering. In addition to my coursework, I have had a diverse range of outside experiences as I have funded my way through school, ranging from joining the team of a family-owned special events company to leading a self-designed trial at my material engineering co-op. These opportunities have taught me how to adapt to and thrive in a variety of environments. I hope to pursue a career that allows me to continue solving problems from the root of the cause. I hope to connect with those afflicted and to learn perspectives I would never have otherwise realized. I am currently seeking an internship or research opportunity to deepen my knowledge base and contribute to innovative solutions in this field.
