About Mega Subramaniam

I am a Professor and the Associate Dean for Faculty at the University of Maryland's College of Information (INFO College/iSchool). I conduct research on the use of libraries as effective learning environments for the development of digital literacies in young adults. My goal is to uncover the challenges young adults face in acquiring these digital literacies and the pedagogical reforms needed to facilitate the learning of these literacies in informal learning environments. I am also interested in enhancing the skills of pre-service and in-service library staff to facilitate the learning of digital literacies. I embrace the research-practice partnerships model by bringing research developments in information science, learning sciences, and human-computer interaction into librarianship. I have successfully led the design of multiple professional development resources and training for in-service and pre-service library staff including ReadyNOW, ConnectedLib, Safe Data Safe Families, HackHealth, Youth Experience, and IMPACT. I am currently leading the curriculum development for the Marylanders Online project, a digital literacy resource hub for the state of Maryland.My research has resulted in several national recognitions, most recently including the Library Journal's 2019 Movers and Shakers award, YALSA’s 2020 Outstanding Achievement Award, and the Fulbright Specialist Award.Please see my personal website for a more detailed overview of my work, including an overview of the research projects that I am working on and my complete CV.
