Background
About Melissa Lenos
I have over twenty years of experience teaching and administration at the college level, including teaching courses in film studies, English literature, composition, and cultural studies, serving as a department chair and program director. I also have eight years of experience in directing higher education grants (federal and private). My comprehensive experience in curriculum design includes developing courses in all of the above listed subject areas, as well as online courses for the Canvas, Moodle, and BlackBoard learning platforms. I have participated in multiple accreditation projects, including co-authoring the Higher Learning Commission Assurance Report that resulted in Donnelly College's removal from HLC's probation status in 2019, and the 2021 Substantive Change application that allowed Donnelly to offer hybrid and remote courses. I also have educational consulting experience, including higher education marketing projects for iParadigms (creators of Turnitin software) and over a decade of experience developing faculty supplemental materials for WW Norton publishing group. My academic research focuses on narratology in Hollywood and other popular media, with a concentration on the uses of fairy and folktale in contemporary texts, media pedagogy, and the popular culture of Generation X. After completing a PhD in Mass Media & Communication at Temple University in 2009, and ten years at Donnelly College in Kansas City, Kansas, I am now Senior Director of Graduate Advising and Engagement for the Humanities in the Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. Areas of expertise: Grant management (federal and private) Experiential & project-based learning design Student career readiness (undergraduate & graduate) US film history and theory Media/communication English literature and composition Narrative and narratology Fairytales, folktales, & mythology US popular culture (esp Generation X) Curriculum development & design Accreditation assurance Effective educational assessment Student advising & support
