About Melissa Nelson

I am a PhD student within the iSchool at the University of British Columbia. My research interests emerge from the intersection of fan and library and information studies (FanLIS), with particular attention to knowledge organization and migration within parafandom and other communities who co-create fannish texts. More broadly, I am also interested in the ethics of research with online data, participatory knowledge organization, digital infrastructure, and information behaviour. I hold a Master's of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) from UBC and a Bachelor of Arts in communication from Simon Fraser University. Highlights from my time in the MLIS program include completing a thesis on the role of TikTok in youth health information behaviour as well as a directed research project on fan-tagging practices on Archive of Our Own.
