About Melissa Winchell

Melissa Winchell obtained her doctorate in educational leadership and leadership in urban schools from the University of Massachusetts, Boston. She teaches courses in secondary education pedagogy, curriculum, research, and assessment for undergraduate and graduate students. Melissa's research interests include critical consciousness and antiracist education. She was a lead author for a chapter in Freire’s Intellectual Roots: Toward Historicity in Practice, which won the Society of Education Professors Book Award for 2014. Dr. Winchell’s recent publications include a peer-reviewed article "Minding the (Opportunity) Gap: Critical Consciousness Pedagogy in College Gateway Courses"(2020, Journal of Multicultural Perspectives), a co-edited volume "Mentoring While White: Culturally Responsive Practices for Sustaining the Lives of Black College Students"(2022, Rowman & Littlefield), and a forthcoming peer-reviewed article on antiracist family and school collaborations (2024, Peabody Journal of Education). Melissa is co-founder of EQUITYedu, which offers equity consulting and professional development to PK-16 institutions. She is the founder of Inclusion Matters, Inc, a non-profit supporting, educating, and advocating with families with special needs. She is also a community advocate with the Federation for Children with Special Needs and serves on the board of Brockton’s Department of Developmental Services.
