Background

About Meredith Kain

Let me tell you a story. Not a “once upon a time” type story, but…well maybe a Once Upon a Time. Once Upon a Time I was a rebellious journalism student. I was in a communication program at a university I loved but being pigeonholed into TV. I hated television. I spent my days at a local radio station and my nights at a recording studio. I wasn’t anything like the people I studied with. I played, performed, and spoke. Boy, did I speak. Radio gave me a voice that TV never could. I played the music I wanted and explored the artists I wanted. No ratings meant no worries. No ratings meant total freedom. I’ll never forget my tiny, non-profit radio station. But back to my Once Upon a Time. I was a journalism student. I went through a lot of motions in my communication classes. Some classes I got good grades, some I didn’t. I wasn’t totally engaged in a lot of my coursework, but I embraced the fact that I was a writer and I wanted to do something with it. TV wasn’t it. I was taking a broadcast writing class and my professor wrote four words on the white board that I will never forget. TELL ME A STORY I scoffed. Half the reason why people discredit the media is because of how they spin things. I had a lot of respect for this particular professor though. He had gone through everything – TV, radio, management, getting fired, doing the firing…and now he was teaching. He wanted to teach me to tell a story. “You can report the facts,” he told me. “You should always report the facts. But the thing that will hold your audience’s attention is if you tell them a story. Tell me a story.” So I curbed my rebellious attitude and listened to this man I had so much respect for. I took the motto from my tiny non-profit radio station to heart: Free Your Ears and Your Mind Will Follow. I freed my ears. I learned from my professor. I started telling stories. I love a good story. Let me tell you a story.
