About Mervyn Mitchell

Since September 2021 mervyn has been a Trustee of The Royal Photographic Society. He is a staunch advocate for the use of photography as a means of engaging and inspiring communities and individuals For the past 12 years Mervyn has been engaging with marginalised communities in a number of different ways. He began as a Community Engagement Officer for The New Art Exchange which is the largest gallery in the UK dedicated to culturally diverse contemporary visual arts. 10 years ago (until present day) he co-founded the Nottingham Photographer’s Hub and their mission was to give a voice to marginalised people and communities through bespoke community-based photography courses designed around beneficiary needs. Their work is focused in two specific areas 1. Adults with mental ill health 2. Young People (16 to 18 years) not in education, employment or training. He has also gained funding from the Arts Council to work with primary schools 1.Using photography to help bridge the gap between urban and rural schools 2.Introducing positive black role models through photography workshops. Mervyn is also a photography tutor for Inspire: Culture, Learning and Libraries, where they deliver cultural and learning services across Nottinghamshire He has also produced images and photofilm that have been exhibited in the UK and Abroad. Before developing his photography practice Mervyn worked in industry for over 25 years in the areas of Sales, Marketing and project management and achieved the post graduate ‘Diploma in Management’ Contact Email: mervynmitchell@ntlworld.com
