Background

About Mette Sterre

I'm a visual artist, mainly focusing on performative installations starring entities created through body maks, researching what else we could be beyond being human. Currently based in Seoul, Korea where I'm an artist-in-residence at MMCA Changdong Residency with the Support of the Mondriaan Fonds. My current research evolves around the sensory and digital, intuition and rationality, humans and robotics and the notions of consciousness. I'm a Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten Amsterdam alumini, where my work has been developing in the directions of wearable technology such as soft robotics. I hold a Master degree from the University of London, University of Arts and Design Central Saint Martins where I studied "Performance Design & Practice". My work deals with the grotesque: the world of topsy-turvy, the uncanny and the paradox. Inspired by Fibonacci, the carnivalesque, sociology and cultural history of horror movies, I'm currently focusing on the grotesque body. In my work I research social political issues that I translate in body mask based performances. These can take the form of parades, club, gallery, public space performances or theatre shows. This social cultural commentary is my motivation to start creating, debating, involving, researching and discussing with others. I've performed and exhibited in Robert Wilsons Watermill Center in New York, the Triennial Design Museum in Milan, the Platform Theatre in London, Art Rotterdam, the Hermitage Museum in Amsterdam, Kunsthal Rotterdam, Migros Museum in Zurich, the Prague Theatre Design Quadrennial, Theater de Veste in Delft, Birmingham Art Weekender, London Design Week, David Robert Arts Foundation "Frieze 10th anniversy, an evening of performances", the Fashion Space Gallery, Marres in Maastricht, Kunstverein Hamburg and IBB in Curacao. My work has been featured in the New York Times, Hyperallergic, StirWorld, Dezeen, Vogue, Metropolis M, VPRO, Volkskrant, NRC handelsblad, Montez Press Radio, Parool, Xbit magazine, Wall Street Journal, Artnet, Catlin Guide, Artefact Magazine, Dazed and Confused, the Hollywood Reporter. I've worked on commission for organisations such as Rijkwaterstaat, Woonstad Rotterdam and the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Part of my practice is also teaching, training and mentoring for organisations such as Central Saint Martins, Chelsea Art College, Royal Academy of Visual Art The Hague, IBB, Theater and Dance Academy Amsterdam, Oskar Kokoschka's Summerschool in Salzburg and more.
