About Michael Ashmore

I have trained the martial art called Tai Chi Chuan (also spelled Taijiquan) over thirty years. The Wu family, whom I learn from, is known for their thorough teaching system. I have access to centuries of practical experience toward making my Tai Chi Chuan classroom a safe space for everyone involved. I am also happy to explain why training the basic requirements for traditional Tai Chi Chuan can have such profound benefits, as well what distortions will make training unsafe, and why. This includes knowing when and how to adapt the traditional syllabus to individual situations when necessary or helpful. Wu's Tai Chi Chuan Academy Detroit is a school for teaching a traditional art in the modern world. This change of context can give our students and faculty a place where they may, for a short time, put aside the stresses of modernity, and eventually learn to do so at will. As Sifu of the Wu's Tai Chi Chuan Academy Detroit, I teach the same tradition of Tai Chi Chuan that my own Sifu's great-great grandfather originally learned as an officer of the Palace Battalion of the Chinese Imperial Guard from the famous Yang Luchan. To the best of my ability, I will maintain the technical and ethical standards of the art for the benefit of my colleagues, my students, and their students into the 21st century.
