About Michael Batu

Dr. Michael Batu is a Filipino-Canadian economist and an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of the Fraser Valley in British Columbia, Canada. His research focuses on applied econometrics, applied macroeconomics, development economics, and the scholarship of teaching and learning economics. Dr. Batu holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with Computer Applications, graduating with Academic Distinction from San Beda College in Manila. He was among the first two graduates of the Master in Applied Economics program at De La Salle University Manila. After moving to Canada, he pursued graduate studies at the University of Guelph, earning both a Master of Arts in Economics and a Ph.D. in Economics, with his dissertation titled "Three Essays in Remittance Effectiveness." With over two decades of teaching experience across three continents, Dr. Batu has established himself as an outstanding educator. He began teaching at the university level immediately after completing his undergraduate degree and has since received multiple awards for teaching excellence. At De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, he was recognized as Faculty of the Year for two consecutive years. In Canada, he earned the Teaching Excellence Award at the University of Guelph and the Highest Teaching Score Award at the University of Windsor. Beyond academia, Dr. Batu has contributed to public policy and economic research. He previously worked as an economist for the Government of Ontario, Canada, and served as an intern at the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) in the Philippines. His research has been published in leading economics journals, and his expert insights on economic issues have been featured in Canadian, Philippine, and American media outlets. Additionally, he is a reviewer for several internationally published economics textbooks.
