About Michael Behm

As an in-house claims counsel, I triage and advise about policy disputes, insurance issues, financial loss, internal dispute resolution and risk management. I am familiar with many and varied Australian & Lloyds policy wordings across various professions and assist retail brokers and their clients in dealing with financial lines claims and risk management issues particularly in the burgeoning areas of management liability and cyber risks. After eight years with the Queensland Law Society (QLS) dealing with solicitors professional risks, culminating as Director of Law Claims, I spent the next 10 years managing claims and risk management departments for solicitors risks across a number of insurers. A lawyer at heart, I can explain complex matters simply and enjoy structuring good advices. I developed newsletters, seminars, checklists and general advice to assist insureds to appropriately manage risk and complaints. Many of the checklists and risk-based tools I developed in past roles are still in use. My private consultancy grew my experience through the use of industry risk management standards particularly as they assisted professionals to manage risk through the implementation of appropriate, documented office systems and procedures - I have a background in designing claims management processes. My clients tasked me to examine their office systems and processes consequent upon regulatory investigation as well as provide risk management training as part of CPD requirements. I maintain a practicing certificate to ensure legal professional privilege as required and have volunteered my expertise at Board level. I now mentor law students about the job market, practice issues and directions. I am open to a Board position and am happy to discuss opportunities.
