I landed my first job as a certificated special education teacher two months before my daughter was born. Now she is sixteen. As she has grown, I have shared my profession with her, specifically the love and sense of wonderment I often feel when teaching my students. Eleven years ago I figured out that teaching students with low incidence disabilities was the best fit for me. More recently, Discrete Trials and Pivotal Response Training (PRT) have proved to be powerful tools for teaching matching, imitation and joint attention, all gateways to academic engagement. PRT, in particular, has offered the opportunity for teaching reciprocal play as well as a more structured pathway for learning from my students what motivates them.
